Social media was abuzz this morning about a rally being held in downtown Peterborough over the weekend.

Members of the Canadian Nationalist Front held a White Pride rally at the corner of George and Simcoe on Sunday.

We reached out to Kevin Goudreau, Chair of the Canadian Nationalist Front about why he was in Peterborough and why a rally was taking place. He responded back by saying
"The intention was to celebrate European Heritage/White Pride as all other groups of people celebrate their pride whether it be gay or black pride its not wrong or racist to celebrate white pride is the bottom line."

Lauren Gilchrist of the Peterborough Police Service says they did "get a call for service at around 4:30pm on Sunday afternoon about six or seven people carrying white pride flags, and possibly in a disturbance with some other people. Officers were dispatched to the area but the subjects were gone on arrival and could not be located. No one came forward to make any further complaint at the scene and we did not receive any further reports."

When we asked about the legal aspects of such rallies being held, we were told by Gilchrist "While people have the right to peaceful assembly, we encourage anyone with concerns regarding a protest or rally to call us. We certainly want to know about incidents such as this so we can appropriately monitor the situation."
