CITY COUNCIL GIVES $4 MILLION COMMITMENT TO CANOE MUSEUM

City council has once again changed its mind on support being pledged to the Canadian Canoe Museum. Staff originally recommended giving $4 million, which was lowered to $2 million during budget talks.

We are expecting to get an update on the United Way's annual campaign. A press conference has been scheduled for this morning at the organization's office on Stewart Street at 10:30. The goal is $1.85 million this year.

Three teens are facing charges following a north-end theft attempt. Officials say the teens went into store on Saturday, grabbed a few items and then walked out without paying for them.

MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING FATAL FIRE IN FENELON FALLS

City of Kawartha Lakes OPP have arrested a man in connection to a fatal fire over the weekend in Fenelon Falls. There has been no word yet on what charges will be laid against the accused.

Peterborough County OPP is still investigating the cause of a fatal crash. Yesterday afternoon, two vehicles collided head-on along Highway 7 near Blezard Line.

CITY BUDGET GOES FOR FINAL APPROVAL AT COUNCIL

A final vote will be held this evening on Peterborough's 2018 budget. The plan calls for 2.85 per cent tax increase, or an extra $109 on a home valued at $243,000. Councillor Lesley Parnell says establishing a financial plan is always a difficult balancing act.

REPORT: PETERBOROUGH TO GET MARIJUANA STORE NEXT YEAR

The doors of a marijuana store will be open in Peterborough by next July, just in time for the legalization of pot in Canada. City CAO Allan Seabrooke confirmed the timeline in an email to the Examiner late last week.
