A strong second period was the difference as the Lakefield Chiefs moved back into a tie at the top of the COJHL standings. Lakefield beat the Clarington Eagles 4-1 last night, scoring three times in the second frame.

NICK RITCHIE AND TEAM CANADA SKATE TO PRE-TOURNAMENT WIN OVER SWEDEN

Nick Ritchie was held off the score sheet but Team Canada looked impressive in a tune-up win against Sweden. Max Domi, Josh Morrissey, Anthony Duclair, Shea Theodore and Sam Reinhart all scored for Canada in a 5-2 win.

It's a disease that hasn't been very common in many years, but for the past month, everyone has been talking about the mumps. It began in Anaheim with Peterborough-native Corey Perry and since then, 14 players in five organizations in the NHL have been diagnosed with the disease.

Trent University will be getting some international exposure in the first half of 2015. The school announced recently that it will host the "Contesting Canada's Future" international conference, which examines concerns ranging from the environment and science to Canadian art and music.

EB 401 CLOSED NEAR PORT HOPE

The eastbound lanes of the 401 near Port Hope are CLOSED, and will be for several hours as police investigate a fatal collision involving a pedestrian. The OPP say that around 2:43pm, they received a call that a pedestrian was struck by an eastbound vehicle west of Ontario Street.
